The 2x2 cube is a twisty puzzle with a cube shape that has 3 axes. Each axis has only 1 cut along it, giving rise to just two layers, and making the 2x2 a very simple puzzle to look at. It has just 8 corner pieces, with no centre pieces and no edge pieces.

History

The 2x2 cube (called the “Pocket Cube”) was actually invented earlier than the Rubik’s Cube by Larry Nichols in 1970. It was soon after launched by Eastsheen and V-Cube began mass producing them, and it started getting popular amongst people.

2x2 Cube Records

The first ever 2x2 world record single was set by Gunnar Krig in November 2004, with a time of 10.87. Since then, with the developments in solving methods, to a point where people were solving the entire cube with one algorithm almost every time, the current world record single is now a mind-blowing 0.49 seconds! It was achieved by Maciej Czapiewski from Poland in 2016.
